Retailers that host illegal slot machines would not be required to provide the same assistance and education.

While Missouri law prohibits individuals under the age of 21 from gambling, placing illegal slot machines in gas stations and malls will make it nearly impossible to ensure that all players are of legal age.

To top it all off, the state is “promising” that a small portion of proceeds from the legalization of these illegal slot machines will be dedicated to helping veterans. Don’t be fooled by this false promise – mere pennies on the dollar will go to our state’s veterans, while the rest will go to the illegal slot machine owners.

Thousands of retailers who sell Missouri Lottery tickets received a warning this week: If they have potentially illegal gambling machines in their stores, they could face prosecution.

Although it’s unknown whether local prosecutors would follow through on the warning, the letters sent by Lottery chief May Scheve could make gas station owners and others think twice about being involved in the spread of gaming terminals across the state.

“Sales of games through illegal gambling devices hurts legal Lottery sales and profits for public education,” Scheve wrote in the Oct. 3 letter obtained by the Post-Dispatch.
